CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The wonders of living in a small town! Over the next few days, word about Jack's accident spread like wildfire. Friends and colleagues alike called - a lot - to check on his welfare, and a few of his deputies stopped by to see him in person.

On the upside, Meg, Cam, Sally and Sam visited with the baby. It was hard to know who they were there for, Jack or the baby. The baby got a lot more oooing and cooing than Jack did, and he jokingly acted offended. Annie was happy for their visit. It was nice to laugh again, but more importantly, it made her happy to see Jack smile. She hadn't seen him so much as grin in three days. The visit really seemed to pull him out of his funk.

Cam was the first one to bring up the 'incident,' as it was now being referred to. "Have you come up with any possible suspects yet, bud?"

"No, nothing. Annie and I suspected someone for a bit there, but we've decided not to pursue that angle. It seems too unlikely. Personally, I'm leaning toward Deputy Donner's theory that it could have been kids up to no good. Or maybe someone I arrested or ticketed who's bent on getting even. Either way, I doubt we'll ever find out who's responsible."

"Who did you suspect at first?" Cam asked.

Annie and Jack looked at each other, neither one wanting to tell their friends who they'd originally thought might be the culprit. Annie was the one to break the silence. "Vic."

Cam was incredulous. "Vic? Vic Trent? Wow! Why Vic?" he asked.

"We don't want to go into details, so let's just say he hasn't been very nice to Annie," said Jack. "I initially thought he might have a crush on her and doesn't want me around. But after giving it some thought, we decided the idea didn't carry much weight. It sounds too far-fetched, so we've decided not to go there."

"Have you had one of your deputies check him for priors?" Cam asked, clearly intent on seeing this through, as any lawman worth his salt would do.

"Yep. Other than one DUI and a couple of speeding tickets, there's nothing else there. He's pretty clean."

"Anyone want another drink? Or coffee?" Annie wanted to change the subject. It was wearing heavily on Jack and she could see he was exhausted. Her offer had the opposite effect and seemed to make everyone realize it was time to go. They all stood to leave, noticing, for the first time, how haggard Jack was looking. She thanked everyone for coming and invited them to return any time.

Once they'd all gone, Jack did not need coaxing to climb the stairs and, with Annie's assistance, remove his clothes and get into bed. He was asleep within second.

Annie wasn't so lucky. Sleep, for her, proved elusive. Her mind was racing through a multitude of scenarios and worry that Vic could in fact be the one who perpetrated this crime. To hurt
